In our continuing mission to bring you the latest and most up-to-date information about online dvd sales and rentals, we’re starting a new two-part series of reviews.

In the first series, we’ll review 10 of the most popular dvd rental sites, documenting our experiences with each one. The list of 10 sites is still being narrowed down as we want to do our research and ensure we’re choosing the very best. Once we have the final list, we’ll post it here before we begin our month long service comparison and review.

In the second series, we’ll buy DVDs from the 10 most popular online DVD retailers and provide similar reviews using criteria including price, speed, customer service, and more. One thing at a time though, so we’re off to finalize the top 10 DVD rental site review master list. Stay tuned…

If you’ve ever experienced, or should I say had the pleasure of renting movies online, you know how convenient it is. No trip to the store, no lines, no sold out titles. Memberships make it even more convenient by allowing DVD movie titles to be shipped to you automatically, based upon your preferences.

Putting your membership on autopilot can be great, but what if a problem arises such as receiving the wrong DVD title, or a damaged copy? What if the movie you selected is so awful that you stop watching halfway through, and now don’t have a movie to watch?

With Netflix, there’s really nothing that can be done except wait for another movie.

This is where Blockbuster Online’s biggest advantage comes in: they have locations that cover the entire U.S., and you can exchange the movies you rented online for in-store movies at anytime. That means unless you live way out in the woods or otherwise desolate area, you can get a new movie or correct a shipment mistake just by visiting a local store.

That kind of flexibility just can’t be offered by Netflix, whom only handles DVD rentals and sales online and has no plans for retail locations. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top, but it’s obvious to me that Blockbuster Online has an extreme competitive advantage with its’ current in-store exchange policy.

Let’s face it: noone enjoys going to the video store. The crowded lines, the unavailable movies that you’re dying to see, and the headaches. Plus, with gas prices being at an all-time high, it just doesn’t make sense to drive your vehicle to the video store when you’re looking to to buy or rent DVD movies.

Luckily, we have tons of reputable online DVD sales and rental sites to choose from these days. Companies like NetFlix and Blockbuster Online make it easier than ever to browse from thousands of available DVD movie titles and order instantly, all from the comfort of your own home. There are now also services that allow for immediate movie downloads or on-demand services, but we’ll get to those later.

How does an online DVD rental service work? Well, for the most part, the DVD rental process is identical for each online DVD rental company and follows the same general outline:

You visit the online DVD rental site and signup for a rental package of your choosing, from a monthly subscription to a pre-paid yearly membership.

Once all of the steps required to join are completed, select the DVD movies, videos, or anything else the company carries and the DVDs will be sent to you within a few days.

The DVD movies rented will arrive with a return envelope. After you have watched each DVD, place it in the return envelope and your account will be credited with the return.

Repeat, and enjoy! Information about new movie titles and movies that match your interests will automatically be emailed to you. Rent unlimited movies!

For more information about DVD sales online, please stay tuned as we work hard to inform our visitors about this new time saving service.
